With a 6kg cooking gas cylinder now going for about Sixteen Thousand Naira and A 12.5kg LPG cylinder being sold at the rate of over twenty-one Thousand Naira(depending on the location), it’s apparent there is a lot of economic sense in properly maintaining your gas cylinder to prolong its lifespan.
These are some of the measures you can take to prevent your cylinder from getting damaged or expiring prematurely.
Ø Don’t allow salty water, oil or other fluids to stay on your cylinder
Many users of camp gas (3kg, 5kg, 6kg, 10kg and sometimes, 12.5kg that have their burners fixed directly on top of the cylinder) are fond of leaving salty water, oil and other fluids that spill on the cylinder during the cooking process. These fluids react with the metallic surface of the cylinder and kickstart its corrosion.
As more salty water, oil and other fluids pour on the cylinder without being wiped off, the corrosion of the cylinder advances to a level where it will eventually result in the cracking of the cylinder; rendering the cylinder unusable.
Ø Don’t keep your cylinder in damp places
Keeping your cooking gas cylinder in damp places where moisture accumulates on it will hasten its corrosion and lead to its damage.
Be mindful of the welded Joints
Desist from hitting your cylinder on hard surfaces, most especially the welded joints.
The application of force on the welded joints of the cylinder can lead to a minor or major failure, which can culminate in a leakage or explosion. Rolling your cylinder on hard surfaces is also not advisable.
Address leaking valves or burners without delay
Don’t hesitate to fix leaking valves or burners to prevent cooking fire from latching onto the cylinder and damaging it. When fire from the burner makes contact with the cylinder, it weakens the metallic surface and causes rapid corrosion that culminates in the rupture of the cylinder.
Repaint when paint peels off
Repaint your cylinder without delay immediately you notice the paint peeling off. This is because the bare portion where the paint has peeled off is the area where corrosion will commence and propagate at a rapid rate. Paint protects the cooking gas cylinder against corrosion
